Bali neighborhoods: where to stay, from Canggu to Uluwatu

Bali is a province, so you're choosing an area rather than a city neighborhood. Where to base for a month, starting with Canggu and Ubud, and what each area gives and takes.

Part of: Paying in Indonesia

The visitor map of Bali covers the province’s south and center: Badung’s coast (Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta and the Bukit), Denpasar, the capital, and Ubud, inland in Gianyar. Distance here is measured in traffic, so every “where should I stay” question is really “which trips will I make every day.” Pick the area for the month you want, then a lane off the main road inside it.

Five areas work as a base, and a few more are worth knowing by name.

Where to base

  1. Canggu: the nomad base

A black-sand coast of about ten kilometers in North Kuta that went from rice fields and a 1990 surf contest to cafés, coworking, gyms and beach clubs, with villas filling the old paddies. Batu Bolong is the dense, loud core around Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong: Old Man's and Black Sand Brewery, and buffet warungs such as Warung Bu Mi and Varuna Warung, where you point at the dishes for a plate of nasi campur. Berawa is the beach-club end, around FINNS. Pererenan, across the river, is quieter and newer, with better footpaths on the beach side. Base here for your first month, on a lane rather than Jalan Raya Canggu.

  2. Ubud: rice fields and the arts

The inland town in Gianyar: the palace, Puri Saren Agung, and its dance performances, the Sacred Monkey Forest, the Campuhan Ridge walk at sunset, yoga studios and a long-established vegetarian and wellness scene, in a cooler, wetter climate than the coast. Jalan Raya Ubud runs east to west past the palace and the Ubud Art Market opposite it; Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman run south toward the forest. Babi Guling Ibu Oka is the town's babi guling institution (spit-roast suckling pig, so plainly pork), and the Ubud Food Festival comes round every April. No beach, and a long drive to the coast. Base here for a quieter month on foot.

  3. Seminyak: the polished strip

North of Kuta and Legian, with some of Bali's highest land and lodging prices, boutiques, spas, fine dining and many resident expats. Petitenget holds the destination restaurants, Merah Putih among them, and Potato Head; Warung Babi Guling Pak Malen on Sunset Road is the everyday institution; Kerobokan is the residential spill inland. Jalan Kayu Aya and Jalan Petitenget are walkable, and it's closer to the airport than Canggu or Ubud. Coworking is thin and restaurants turn over fast. Base here for a polished week or two, working from the villa.

  4. Uluwatu and the Bukit: cliffs and surf

The limestone peninsula at Bali's southern tip, with the clifftop surf breaks made famous by the 1972 film Morning of the Earth, cliff-and-beach villages, and a building boom of resorts, villas and beach clubs. Uluwatu Temple sits on a cliff above the sea, with a Kecak performance at sunset; Single Fin watches the surf from the clifftop above Suluban. Jimbaran, at the peninsula's neck, grills seafood over coconut husks on the beach at sunset. It's spread out, with no bus, so you'll need transport. Base here if surf or the sea is the point.

  5. Denpasar and Sanur: the local side

Denpasar is the provincial capital most visitors skip: Taman Puputan square, the Bajra Sandhi monument in Renon's field beside the governor's office, and Pasar Badung, its largest traditional market. It suits a long stay built on markets and local life, and a little Bahasa helps. Sanur, inside South Denpasar on the east coast, is the calm, older resort, with the Le Mayeur Museum and a flat beachfront path. Quiet at night, which is the point for families and older travelers.

  6. Kuta, Legian, Nusa Dua and the north

Kuta and Legian are the original mass resort beside the airport, with the 2002 bombing memorial on Jalan Legian; not a nomad base. Nusa Dua is a gated enclave of large five-star resorts, with Tanjung Benoa cheaper beside it, built for resort holidays rather than a month of work. Lovina, in the north, is far quieter than the south, with dawn dolphin trips.

The short version: Canggu for a social first month with coworking, or Pererenan if you want it quiet. Ubud for a quiet, creative or wellness month, Seminyak and Petitenget for a short, food-first stay, and Uluwatu and the Bukit for surf and sea. Denpasar is the pick for local life and markets, and Sanur, with its seafront path, suits families, older travelers and anyone after calm.

Pick the trips you'll make every day first, and the area second.

Water is the other thing to ask about. In the September 2025 floods, Bali’s worst in years and at the end of the dry season, Denpasar took the worst of it, the road from Denpasar through Kerobokan to Canggu went under water, and a river overflowed in Kerobokan. Ask a host how the lane fared before you book a wet-season month. Rents move fast, so compare live listings for the lane you want and book a short first stay.

Money habits change little from area to area. Change cash only at licensed changers, which display a license and give receipts; an unlicensed changer short-counting a tourist in Ubud went viral in 2025. Use ATMs inside a bank branch or a shop. Where a counter shows a QRIS code, verify in the app first, then scan it and check the rupiah amount; a licensed local partner pays the merchant in rupiah. Keep small notes for the warungs and stalls without one. The Bali places directory lists warungs, cafés, coworks and sights by area, and how to pay in Indonesia covers the counter.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Booking a villa on the main road

Jalan Raya Canggu is notoriously jammed, worst on the school run, in the late afternoon and at sunset. Pick Pererenan or a lane off the main roads, and send your driver a map pin rather than the villa's name.

  2. Choosing the area by name instead of by your days

Canggu to Uluwatu and anywhere to Ubud are long trips. If you'll surf the Bukit every morning or work in Canggu every day, sleep there.

  3. Expecting a beach in Ubud, or quiet in Batu Bolong

Ubud has rice fields, culture and cafés, and no coast. Batu Bolong has the scene, and the noise that comes with it. Book the month you actually want.

  4. Taking the first rent figure you read

Most 2026 rent numbers in circulation come from platforms selling the listings. Scan live listings for the lane you want, ask about flooding, and book a short first stay.

Common questions

Where should I stay in Bali for a first trip?

For a working month, Canggu: it has the island's densest coworking, cafés, gyms and community, and Pererenan or a lane off the main road keeps the noise down. For a quieter, greener month, Ubud, where the center is walkable, with rice fields and the Campuhan Ridge walk close by. For a short, food-first stay, Seminyak. Base on the Bukit only if surf or the sea is the point and you'll rent transport.

Is Canggu too busy?

It can be. Traffic is the defining complaint: Jalan Raya Canggu is notoriously jammed, the Jalan Anggrek shortcut to Berawa often stands still, and early school runs, late afternoon and sunset are the worst windows. Roads, drainage and waste are all under strain. The fixes are local ones: Pererenan to the west is quieter and newer, a lane off the main road beats a villa on it, and a bike taxi beats a car at peak.

Which area of Bali is closest to the airport?

Seminyak, Sanur and Nusa Dua are the closest of the visitor areas; Kuta sits right beside the runway and Jimbaran just south of it. Canggu, the far end of the Bukit and especially Ubud are long trips, more so in the late-afternoon traffic. If you land late or leave early, a night near the airport end of the island is the easy option.

Where should I stay in Bali for surfing?

Canggu for beginner-to-intermediate beach breaks, with the cafés and community to match. The Bukit, around Uluwatu, for intermediate and advanced riders: the clifftop breaks there were made famous by the 1972 film Morning of the Earth. The Bukit also works well as a second month after Canggu.

How much does a month's rent cost in Bali?

Rents move fast and vary lane to lane, and the 2026 figures in circulation come mostly from listing platforms marketing their own inventory, so a number here would mislead more than it helps. Seminyak has some of the island's highest land and lodging prices. Compare live listings for the lane you want, and book a short first stay before you commit to a month.
