A set lunch upstairs on Calle Murillo, the Saturday market run by the caseritas, and the tasting menus and wood-fire grills down in Zona Sur.

Mercado Rodríguez

The city's largest popular market, run by the caseritas who have their stalls set up before dawn: potatoes in dozens of varieties, fish up from Titicaca, and soups and salteñas from the food stalls. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the busiest. The stalls are cash, and it is a place to keep a hand on your pockets.

Gustu

PICK

The country's flagship restaurant, founded in 2012 by Noma's co-founder and run by Bolivian chefs since late 2024, and a fixture on Latin America's 50 Best rankings. There is a tasting menu and an a la carte menu; book ahead.

Ancestral

PICK

A wood-fire grill built on Bolivian produce, opened in 2019 by a former head chef of Gustu, down in Achumani. It is an evening room, and the listings disagree on which days it opens, so check before you go.

The fire is the point; go hungry, and check the night.

Phayawi

PICK

Aymara heritage cooking with a taste for offal, heart anticuchos and tongue among them, ranked on Latin America's 50 Best extended list in 2022 and again in 2024. Older listings put it in Sopocachi; the current address is Achumani, in Zona Sur.

Of the three serious tables in the south, the one that tastes most like the Altiplano.

Roaster Specialty Coffee

The country's first specialty coffee shop, roasting its own and baking its own, with a San Miguel room where the coffee comes first. The wifi is good and the hours are long, which makes it the Zona Sur café for a real working session.

Manual brews, matcha and breakfast on Plaza Abaroa, in the middle of Sopocachi. It is a coffee room first and quietest between the meal rushes; Sunday runs shorter.

HB Bronze Coffeebar

On a 2025 list of South America's top 100 coffee shops, a bronze-and-timber room southeast of Plaza Murillo in the center. Go for the cup: it is a coffee destination first, and the room changes register in the evening for wine and coffee cocktails.

A steampunk-industrial cocktail bar on Av. 20 de Octubre, with a kitchen that keeps serving late. It is the anchor of a Sopocachi night, the place the evening starts or ends up.

Do & wander

The cable-car loop over the rim, the badlands south of the city, Sunday wrestling in El Alto, and the Thursday market that jams the airport road.

The Teleférico loop

Up the Red Line from Estación Central, over the cemetery to the rim, along the edge on the Silver Line with the whole bowl below, and down the Yellow Line into Sopocachi. An hour in the air that shows you the whole city at once.

Valle de la Luna

Eroded clay badlands about 10 km south of the center, with two marked circuits, a short one and a longer one, that you can walk singly or back to back. A minibus from Plaza San Francisco gets you there, or a short taxi ride; open daily.

Cholita wrestling

PICK

Sunday-afternoon lucha libre in El Alto, fought by women in polleras. Take the Red Line up to the Ceja and arrange the ride back before you go; the venue shifts between promotions, so confirm the week of.

Feria 16 de Julio

The Thursday and Sunday mega-market on the El Alto rim, one of the largest open-air markets on the continent and the reason the airport road jams on those days. Ride the Red Line to the 16 de Julio station, go in daylight and keep valuables hidden.

El Montículo and the Muela del Diablo

The little park at the top of Sopocachi, for sunset over Illimani, and the 10 km hike to the volcanic tooth above Zona Sur, a full day and only once you have acclimatized. The hike starts from Pedregal, out in Zona Sur, which is a minibus or a taxi from the center.
