Turn stablecoins into pesos in Colombia

You're holding stablecoins and you want pesos. In Medellín you barely need to convert anything: hold USDC or USDT in Yodl, scan the Bre-B QR the counter already shows, and a licensed local partner pays the merchant in pesos.

Part of: Paying in Colombia

Search “how do I turn USDT into pesos in Colombia” and you’ll get exchanges, peer-to-peer boards and remittance desks, pages built for someone converting a balance into cash to send somewhere else. Most of it solves a problem you don’t have. If you’re a traveler holding stablecoins, the fastest way to spend them in Medellín skips the stack of banknotes entirely: pay with them directly, at the counter, and let the shop receive pesos.

That’s the whole idea. You keep your money as stablecoins until the moment you spend it, and the peso side happens on the merchant’s end, handled by a licensed local partner. You never sign up for a local wallet, and you’re not hauling cash around in case a place refuses cards. Nor is there a rate to hunt down before you pay. You scan, you approve, and the balance in your pocket stays put until the next counter.

Spend it, don't change it

  1. Keep it as stablecoins

Hold USDC or USDT in Yodl. You never turn the balance into pesos and park it somewhere; it stays yours, as stablecoins, until you pay.

  2. Scan the Bre-B QR

Cafés, bakeries and a growing number of shops in Medellín show a Bre-B code at the register, the same one locals pay with Nequi or their bank app. Point Yodl at it and check the peso amount before you approve.

  3. The shop gets pesos

Approve on your phone. A licensed local partner pays the merchant in pesos, and your afternoon carries on without a detour to an ATM.

In Medellín, you rarely need to change money at all.

There are moments the QR won’t reach: the fruit stalls at Plaza Minorista, the bus, a street taxi, the smallest tienda. Those run on cash, so keep a thin float of pesos and skip the brick. One modest ATM pull covers most of a trip; when the machine offers to convert to dollars, take pesos. The Metro is its own thing entirely; the turnstile takes no card, only a Cívica card bought in cash at the station booth. Anywhere with a register at all, though, pay by QR.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Chasing a Nequi account you don't need

The resident wallets want a Colombian ID, and you can pay the same Bre-B QR without one. Skip the sign-up; the counter still takes your scan.

  2. Converting everything to cash on day one

A week's pesos in your pocket is a target on the street and an errand to change back. Change a modest amount for the stalls and let the register take the rest.

  3. Stacking ATM fees

Each pull costs a fee on top of your home bank's, and the machine will offer to convert for you at its own rate; decline it and choose pesos. Fewer, smaller pulls, and the QR for the rest.

  4. Hunting for a special rate

The peso floats and there is one market rate; the number on a converter is only a reference. Anyone promising a tourist rate is selling something. What you save here is fees; there's no rate to find.

Common questions

Do I have to convert my crypto to pesos before I can spend it?

No. You hold stablecoins and pay the counter's Bre-B QR directly; a licensed local partner pays the merchant in pesos. There's no step where you swap your balance for cash first.

Do I need Nequi or a Colombian bank account?

No. You don't open a local wallet or a Colombian bank to pay this way. Your side is the stablecoin balance; the licensed partner's side is the pesos that reach the shop.

Spend it where you land.
